History: Entered Star Fleet Academy at age 38 in 2286. Due to prior experience, Merinid qualified as a small craft pilot almost immediately. He pursued tactical and security training in his first year, but when questions arose following the perplexing defeat of his self defense instructor, he transferred to an engineering program, where he excelled in mechanical, electronics and defensive systems engineering. Became involved in advanced deflector shield research during his senior year at the Academy. Assigned to the USS Rigel for an uneventful training cruise and graduated at age 42 in the top five percent of his class. Spent following two years at Starfleet's Advanced Starship Design Bureau concentrating his additional studies on defensive systems. Assigned with the rank of Ensign to Deep Space Five for one year.
Transferred by request to the heavy frigate U.S.S. Avenger at age 46 two months after his 46th birth day, where he was assigned with the rank of Ensign as a weapons systems specialist. In 2295, he was promoted to Ensign First Class as a result of his excellent performance as a Weapons Systems Specialist, but in 9505.00 during the training exercises at Station Salem 1, he was placed on probation, and temporarily demoted to Ensign after two actions that endangered the lives of others. In the battle with the Tholians that followed, the senior officer in the weapons pod was killed, and Rostarr took his place. Unleashing a device that he had worked on personally and in secret, he saved the Avenger from destruction and enabled the ship to rescue the base personnel. As a result, he was promoted from his temporary rank of Ensign to Lieutenant Junior Grade, the first double promotion in Avenger history. After the battle, Merinid took a leave of absence to pursue "a matter of faith" and left for the planet Vulcan.
Later he rejoined the Avenger, transferring to Operations as Chief Tactical Officer, finishing his first and second tours of duty with an exemplary record and with promotions to Lieutenant and Lieutennant Commander respectively. Just before he left the Avenger at the end of his second five year mission onboard, his Jedi nature was at last revealed to the crew during the confrontation at the Maw Installation within the Starwars universe. Upon returning with the Avenger, he left Starfleet on sabbatical and remained away for twenty-four years. However, in 2325, he returned to Starfleet to work within the Department of Technical Services, and later resumed his work in the Advanced Starship Design Bureau.
In 2327 he was promoted to Commander and assigned to the Solaris Class Cruiser, USS Iria. With the Cardassian annexation of Bajor in 2328, he was reassigned to a Starfleet Black Ops team and undertook a brief string of secret missions into Cardassian territory. He returned to the USS Iria periodically (2330-2337) in a special capacity as Advisor/Second Officer and finally returned to serve out the last two years of the Irias second five year mission. His whereabouts for the next four years are unknown, however it is known that he was working on a classified Starfleet mission, and he was sighted on several ships and stations throughout the Federation during this period.
After the Cardassian missions, he was recruited to work on the highly illegal, unauthorized interphasic cloaking program ending up as was one of the original designers of the system. Dissappeared after the loss of the Pegasus in 2357, but returned to Starfleet in 2361 with a starship brought over from the Star Wars universe. Starfleet gave him a grant to reverse engineer the alien technology for integration into Starfleet technology. His work, form 2362 to 2363 formed the basis for the Defiants Fountain stream phaser units. Rostarr took a brief tour of duty aboard a Klingon Defense Force Cruiser in the latter half of 2363 as chief engineer of the KAG/IKV StormBringer as part of the officer exchange program.
He recieved a promotion to Captain late in 2364 and was given command of a special Starfleet strike force and a modified Brel class Klingon Bird of Prey. In 2366, after his promotion to Fleet Captain, he transfered back to Starfleets Advanced Starship Design Bureau and began the design of a successor to both the Wraith class Perimeter Action Vessel and the experimental Valiant Class vessel, Defiant. The new class of ships, designated Sentinel Class is scheduled to be launched in 2372. Using the influence that he has in Starfleets Admiralty Board, Merinid has been assigned as Executive Officer with a rank of Commander aboard the first of the new Sentinel class ships. His prior history and service records have been all but destroyed, and the remaining few copies placed under such heavy layers of security coding that it is all but assured that they will never come to light. The knowledge of his true self resides with only a few members of the Admiralty Board.
Personal: Unmarried. No known family, and Merinid has declined to answer any questions about his past, citing privacy traditions of his people. He tends to be laconic and soft- spoken, and seems to almost consciously avoid company.
Interests include ancient weaponry, fencing and broadsword combat, role-playing games, martial arts; and also piloting, Terran literature (especially that of Arthur Conan Doyle, Isaac Asimov, J.R.R. Tolkien, William Shakespeare and Douglas Adams), the physical sciences, lock picking & other thiefly skills, military intelligence, and verbal fencing--'mind games'. He has proficiency in a wide variety of bladed and energy weapons, as well as engineering, piloting, computer programming and operation and holds a PhD in Spatial Distortion Entrapment of Energetic Graviton Fields as well as several degrees in classified fields. He is an acknowledged expert in the field of Interphasic Spacial Distortion. He is also skilled in languages, and in addition to his native tongue, speaks Federation Standard, Klingon, Cardassian, and several other languages fluently. He appreciates music and art, and is a voracious reader. In addition, he is an accomplished violinist and spends his off hours practicing.
When off duty, Merinid wears a black tunic, a utility belt and a rough- woven, dark black cloak over his thin frame--concealing the mask and limb braces that he must wear. When robed like this, Merinid becomes even more 'ghost' like than normal, moving with utmost silence and seeming to suddenly appear right next to you and then just as suddenly vanish after the conversation. This has had an unsettling effect on many crew members. He suffered serious injuries from an energy weapon at one point in the past, and must wear a breath mask, artificial left lung, limb braces for his left upper arm, and artificial optics on one eye to compensate for these injuries. The optics contained in the mask allow Merinid to see the entire electromagnetic spectrum, and cybernetic implants allow him to process and store information at a phenomenal rate.
Merinid acquired a bronze fire-lizard in the April 2294 hatching, and named it Palantir, which in his native language means "prophetic sight", or "all seeing". In 2297, Merinid sent Palantir forward 76 years into the future, where they rejoined. Whenever duty permits, the dark bronze Palantir perches on Merinids shoulder with his tail wrapped around Merinids neck.
Confidential: Merinid is a native of the universe popularly recognized through the fictional dramatization "Star Wars". He entered this universe through a multidimensional rift, the origins of which are unknown. Merinid is a Jedi Knight but this is a fact known only to a handful of people in Starfleet, all of them in high positions. His Jedi Master was killed by Darth Vader, and Merinid himself was grievously injured, part of the reason for his mask. The remainder of the reason is a fear of being discovered by Imperial agents. He gathered a team of bounty hunters and created a small starship also named Avenger to strike back at the Imperials and avenge his master's death. His entire life focus had been turned to the vengeance of his Master, and he spent the better part of fifteen years pursuing the Imperials and aiding the Rebellion. It was after the destruction of the first Death Star that Merinid discovered the rift in space during a conflict with an Imperial Class Star Destroyer and was forced into our universe.
Although it might appear to many that Merinid has been corrupted to the Dark Side, he merely walks on the gray line between light and dark. His injuries and his master's death once made him sarcastic and bitter with only the flame of vengeance keeping him alive. But after his experiences aboard the Avenger, he came to understand himself, and freed himself from the grip of vengeance.
Merinid asked to be assigned to the Avenger, because it was his belief--and his master's before him--that there are no coincidences , only signs. His Jedi nature was soon discovered by LCDR Boldstar, and subsequently by LCDR Wilson. He has asked both to keep the secret of his nature from the crew, but they convinced him to take the matter to the captain. Vice-Admiral Rosenzweig agreed to keep his identity from both the crew and Star Fleet Command, for as long as he posed no threat to either Star Fleet, the ship or its crew. Finally, Merinid does not carry a light saber, relying upon a favored longsword, however Master Boldstar worked with him at the end of his ten years aboard the Avenger to create his lightsaber which he now keeps hidden away in his quarters.
Prior History: Merinid was born on the Outer Rim Planet Dilliv IX but spent much of his teenage life with a band of outlaw techs moving from one isolated planet to the next and learning the arts of starship design and construction. Involved in several acquisition missions from the start, he seemed to live a charmed life with many close calls. Jedi Master K'ralik came upon him in a seedy bar and immediately recognized the inner talent for the force that was within him. He took Merinid into his care and custody and the young apprentice learned many things in the following eight years.
Kralik had become like a father and friend to young Merinid when Senator Palpitine rose to power and as one of the most vocal of opponents, K'ralik was eliminated early in Vader's extermination of the Jedi. Merinid, a newly turned Jedi Knight challenged the dark Lord, and was left for dead after the duel, his face, throat, and chest slashed open in a long cauterized gash down the left side which left him eyeless on one side and clinging to life. It was the thought of vengeance and the force that kept him alive after the horrific wounds that had been cast upon him by Vader. After being cared for for several months, he fashioned himself a mask and brace to support his injured body and lend it a fearsome appearance. Returning to his outlaw tech friends, he worked with them for awhile and they helped him build his starship in return for his services. Merinid and his band of bounty hunters worked for the Rebellion, and the Alliance replaced his left limb with a seamless prosthetic.
On stardate 2284, Merinid entered into our universe through the rift in space and was picked up after several months. After learning what he could on his own, he applied to Star Fleet in 228706 and entered the Academy in 228709.07. Throughout his career in Star Fleet, Merinid has yet to actually undergo a physical evaluation. Although he has entered examination rooms and lain upon examining tables, Merinid used his unique talent with the Force to alter the memories of the doctors examining him, and the information obtained by the medical instruments. If an examination were to be taken without his knowledge, the truly startling fact that his heart no longer functions would be discovered. The fact that blood flows freely in his arteries and veins is a result of subconscious manipulation of his blood through the force, acquired in those months after his battle with Darth Vader. Merinid strictly controls all functions of his broken body at all times. The fact that the majority of Starfleet command knows nothing of his talent with the force and believes him to be completely human is the result of intensive utilizations of the Force that have become almost second nature to him.
