Mask Of A Thousand Eyes

Some would say that they show a different face to the world.
Some would say that they present a multitude of masks to hide behind.
But for me, each mask that I wear changes not my outward appearance,
but my inner self and facets my vision of the universe.

The real me, where to begin... Gone is the idealistic young kender. The disguises have been dropped, the shadows have gathered, and my natural brooding self is manifested. Despite this I have found myself strangely at peace....

Who am I?
How do I define my past, present, and future?
South Indian, Chinese, Malaysian, British, Canadian, Quebecker, American, Jersey Boy.
Violinist, Bookworm, Trekker, Gamer, Anime Otaku, Fencer, Tragedian, Rennie, Witch, Goth.
Many aspects coalescing to form a whole that is unique and greater than the sum of the parts.
Or perhaps lesser...the essence diluted together into a grey smear?
Perhaps I should let others be the judge of that.

Descriptive Quotes

"How will you know which one he is? Just look for the darkest, gloomiest, most sinister, gothic, evil looking character lurking in the shadows. Think black and look for someone darker than that."
--Stephen Dickenson

"You know, Arn's a lot more perceptive than we give him credit for. We really should stop talking about stuff when he's around. Like when he's anywhere in the [same] building"
--Bruce Pierpont

"Now Arn here, he just floats through the door. He only knocks out of courtesy. Of course, his glasses and keys drop to the floor outside."
--Brander Lien

"Isn't it a little bright for you to be outside?"
"A little..."
"You're so goth you're dead!" -][ris ][ndigo

"Dude Arn, You LURK! That's pretty freaky you know."
--Julia Howe

"I'm glad to see I'm not alone in this one. I was thinking it was going to be seen as a bit freakish. Now if people say that to me, I can say 'Sure I'm a freak, but so is Arnand.' And they'll tell me they already know."
--Haras the Wonder Frog

"You, my dear boy, have some SERIOUS issues..." - Sara
"Well just because he's pure unadulterated evil doesn't mean he isn't a nice guy."
--Unknown

"Now what kind of a friend would I be if I told everything I knew?"
"A good one!" -Murphy Blue

"You really know how to make someone nervous" -Anisah

"OK, this just goes to prove I have very very sick friends with too much free time on their hands!!!" - Kim

My world consists of a variety of obsessions, everything from the Mediaeval/Renaissance to Roleplaying, StarTrek, Anime, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, dancing at goth clubs like "The Bank" and especially music.

I fence epee on the fencing team at school, and do some broadsword fighting on the side. Part of my sick fascination with blades and bladework. I've become extremely interested in the martial arts and I try to work out techniques in my mind from my limited experiences with my Uncle's Kung Fu and observations of other martial artists. Of late I've been taking Equitation for gym credit here at Stevens. One thing I do have to say is that the instructor, Catherine Alexander, runs an excellent horse-back riding class and that thanks to her and the people at the stables I have learned a great deal about how to ride and care for horses. One more skill to add to my Jack-of-all-trades nature.

Of late I have been spending my nights in NYC dancing at various goth clubs like Downtime and Pyramid. Just as you wouldn't go to a wedding without a dressing appropriately, I usually dress more gothic when I go out to these clubs. Sometimes, my friends Manna and Starhawk are good enough to come, and then I can always rely upon Manna's "goth box" for a little extra in the way of forbidding makeup.

I have an extensive collection of Startrek books and papers and belong to two Startrek chapters, the USS Avenger (which covers the New Jersey, Eastern Pennsylvannia, and lower New York), and the USS Sentinel (an internet chapter based out of Stevens Institute of Technology). In case anyone had not realized, I am also an avid fan of Star Wars and seek to bring the sense of mythicism and wonder from that fictional universe into the universe of Startrek whenever possible.

The background you see is for the anime movie, Macross Plus. In case you were wondering what anime means, it stands for Japanese animation, for more in this vein, check out the Stevens Anime Club homepage. Yes, I am also an anime freak, although nowhere near as bad as some otaku =). My favorites include Macross Plus, Ninja Scroll, Iria and Ghost in the Shell movies, and the Tenchi Muyo, Ranma 1/2, Escaflowne, and Slayers series.

Fleet Captain Merinid Rostarr

Commanding Officer, USS Sentinel NX-80103

Starfleet Personnel File 071963
Merinid Rostarr is an enigmatic figure who has served in Starfleet for over two centuries onboard several ships. A Jedi who stumbled through a portal in the Maw Cluster into the StarTrek universe, he has concealed his identity from everyone with layer upon layer of intrigue and deceit. The personnel file above lists all the pertinent data and below is a partial listing of the ships he has served aboard.
Deep Space 5
U.S.S. Avenger NCC-1860
KDF ShadowStorm
U.S.S. Iria NCC-2487
U.S.S. Sentinel NX-80103
Merinid Rostarr is a long-running character that reflects everything that I would be. Quiet, contemplative, and honorable, he has an commanding, if eerie presence that belies his diminuative stature.

Spaurafucile

The sly and cunning Saurian assassin of Kry'lesk who masquerades as a philosopher and apothacarist by day. Twisted and hideously deformed, Spaurafucile is a doubtful ally who never enters into anything unless it serves either his interests or those of his master.

Spaurafucile reflects a state of mind that I had for many years when it seemed that I was always the outsider, even among the few friends that I had. Spaurafucile originated as an AD&D character in my game who constantly hounded the Players. In the end they discovered that he was no more evil than they...only outcast and driven before a cruel master.

Merinid Rrostarr dul Raithair

The Lightless Blade of Night

A dark elf who has spurned not only Lolth, but all gods, he once fled from her minons as she pursued a traitor to her cause. Now he calls upon the power of the Cloak of Ancalagon the Black, an artifact crafted from the wings of the mightiest of black dragons, a eldar beast that dominated all other dragons, whose blood somehow flows through Rrostarr's veins. Not even Merinid has fully realized the massive energies and powers of the artifact, but even he cannot deny its protective, sentient presence. Now he is called upon by mortal wizards on quests to thawart the intentions of gods and deamons, he journeys the lands always seeking to understand this guardian spirit that empowers him.

Again, Merinid Rrostarr has been my character (me) throughout AD&D, Starwars, & the Startrek universe. In the AD&D game in which he originated the deliciously villainous, self-possessed, drow fell in love with Alystin Cormrael-- a chaotic good drow priestess of Elistrae. Their turbulant relationship sparked a whole series of adventures....Alystin constantly trying to mend Rrostarr's ways and bring him into the light. Rrostarr couldn't change his nature, and ultimately the conflict between them cost them their happiness together.

Van Fanel

One night while a bunch of us were sitting around watching anime, we spontaneously decided to assign names (from anime characters that in some way matched us) to each other in order to sow chaos and confusion in emails and at meetings. At the time that I walked into the room they were watching Escaflowne, and I suggested that Bruce should be Allan Schezar. They discounted that suggestion, but decidUhat Van Fanel could fit me quite well. Thus I became Van Fanel while my roommate Matt became Masamichi Fujisawa.

Kairn Akiazi

Kairn Akiazi was born out of an extremely odd game of Freak Legion where a bunch of us here at school were playing ourselves--mutated of course by alpha-formoral implanted in our food by Aramark (a subsidiary of Pentex). Discovering that you're a monster is never pleasant, no matter what powers you get with that change. Just try losing contact with every friend, relative and family member that you have as they run screaming from you. Not to mention the damper that a diet of freshly killed meat tends to put on a social life.

There's a hidden side to all of us...a savage creature of desires and animal passions. Akiazi balances on the edge of sanity and insanity as a Fomori lost to the light but not yet committed to the darkness.

Macavity
"The Mystery Cat"

Macavity is one of my latest personas. Arising out of my first forays into the world of IRC (Internet Relay Chat), he quickly became a well known character on the #shadowrun channel. When I actually went out and met some of the regulars from #shadowrun the shortened version of Macavity, Mac, became my nick. Soon afterward, he became a favorite Shadowrun character of mine, with his background and personality closely reflecting my own. Irreverent, wry, and just a little bit sarcastic, he's a blend of Sean Connery meets Christian Slater meets Chow Yun Fat.

Sometimes you just need to throw your arms up in the air, bury your past and dive into the future irregardless of where the road takes you. Get too caught up in the present and you can founder there dying a slow death of despair.

"Sometimes, even the darkest of mages hear a nagging little voice in the back of their mind, urging them to drag out the old armor, dress up and play the White Knight for a while.

Remember, miracles do happen"
